Central Edmonton

Welcome to Home to Castle

Your Home. Your Community. Your Local Connection.

Ronald Rotsburg

There’s something about fall in Edmonton that feels like a fresh beginning.

The leaves change colour, the evenings become cooler, furnaces begin humming back to life, and suddenly we’re spending a little more time thinking about the places we call home. Summer projects are wrapping up, winter preparations are beginning, and routines that disappeared during the warmer months start settling back into place.

It seems like a fitting time to begin something new.

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Home to Castle — a new local e-magazine, online directory, real estate resource and community hub created for homeowners, renters and anyone interested in making the most of where they live in Edmonton and the surrounding communities.

Home to Castle has been built around a simple idea: home is about much more than owning a house.

Home might be the bungalow you’ve lived in for thirty years. It could be the first house you just bought, a downtown condominium, a suburban townhouse, an acreage outside the city, a basement suite you’re renting while saving for your first home, or the apartment where you’re building a life right now.

It doesn’t matter whether your name is on a land title or a lease.

Home is where life happens.

It’s where families gather, meals are shared, pets somehow claim the most comfortable furniture, children grow up, friends drop by, renovations begin with the innocent words “How hard could this possibly be?” and Saturday morning projects occasionally turn into Sunday evening trips to the hardware store.

Our homes are where we live our lives.

And Home to Castle is about helping you enjoy, maintain, improve, protect and connect with yours.

More Than a Magazine

Although you’re reading the first issue of the Home to Castle e-magazine, the magazine is only one part of what Home to Castle is becoming.

At its heart, Home to Castle is a local resource built around the home and the community surrounding it.

There is an enormous amount of information available online today. In fact, sometimes there’s too much.

Need a plumber? Search one website.

Looking for something to do this weekend? Search another.

Thinking about buying a home? Open another.

Need someone to clean the carpets, inspect a furnace, landscape a yard or help arrange a mortgage? Start searching again.

Looking for a rental property? Another search.

Wondering whether there are any garage sales nearby Saturday morning? Yet another search.

Home to Castle was created to bring many of those things together in one local destination focused on Edmonton and the communities around it.

The e-magazine introduces you to ideas, professionals, events, opportunities and useful information. HomeToCastle.com allows you to take the next step — searching, exploring and connecting with what interests you.

Think of the magazine as the front door.

The website is the rest of the house.

And just like a house, we’ll continue adding to it.

Built for Homeowners — and Renters

When people hear the words home services, it’s easy to immediately think about homeowners.

But renters have homes too.

Someone living in an apartment may not need a roofing contractor, but they may need a moving company, furniture, Internet service, carpet cleaning, professional cleaning, insurance, interior decorating ideas or storage solutions.

A renter may be looking for a better apartment, considering buying their first home, attending a first-time homebuyer workshop or beginning to learn about mortgages.

Someone renting a house may be responsible for lawn care, snow removal or other maintenance depending on their lease.

And regardless of whether someone owns or rents, almost everyone wants their living space to be comfortable, functional and enjoyable.

That’s why you’ll notice something throughout Home to Castle: we aren’t building this exclusively around homeowners.

We want renters here too.

Some information will naturally apply primarily to property owners. Other articles will be useful specifically to renters. Much of what we publish — decorating, organizing, cleaning, energy efficiency, moving, furniture, community events and everyday living — applies to almost everyone.

Your home doesn’t become more important simply because you own it.

Wherever you live, it should feel like yours.

Expert Tips for Real Life

Have you ever searched online for an answer to what seemed like a simple home-related question and discovered that thirty minutes later you somehow had twelve browser tabs open and were less certain than when you started?

We have too.

That’s one reason Expert Tips is an important part of Home to Castle.

Throughout the year, we’ll bring you practical information about maintaining, improving and enjoying your home, with many articles contributed by professionals who work in these industries every day.

The subjects will change with the seasons because living in Edmonton means our homes face very different challenges throughout the year.

In spring, we’ll talk about things such as yard cleanup, drainage, exterior inspections and preparing for renovation season.

Summer may bring landscaping, decks, patios, exterior improvements, cooling and outdoor living.

Fall means preparing for colder weather, checking furnaces, dealing with leaves and gutters, reducing drafts and getting the house ready for an Alberta winter.

And winter?

Well… we live in Edmonton.

We’ll have plenty to talk about.

But Expert Tips won’t be limited to maintenance.

We’ll explore renovations, decorating, financing, mortgages, real estate, insurance, home security, organization, cleaning, energy efficiency, landscaping, moving, investment properties and many other subjects connected to the places where we live.

The objective isn’t to overwhelm you with technical information.

It’s to give you useful information at the time you’re most likely to need it.

Sometimes the best advice isn’t teaching you how to tackle a project yourself. Sometimes it’s helping you understand what questions you should ask before you begin.

Pick a Pro: Finding the Right Help

There are jobs around the home you can comfortably handle yourself.

Then there are jobs where watching three videos online does not necessarily qualify you to rewire the basement.

For those occasions, there’s Pick a Pro.

Home to Castle’s Pick a Pro directory is being developed to connect Edmonton-area residents with local businesses and professionals who provide products and services for the home.

That can include plumbers, electricians, roofers, landscapers, cleaners, flooring specialists, home inspectors, movers, contractors, interior designers, mortgage professionals, REALTORS®, financial professionals and many others.

Instead of simply giving you a company name and telephone number, Home to Castle gives participating professionals an opportunity to tell you more about themselves.

Who are they?

What services do they provide?

What areas do they serve?

What experience do they bring?

And, perhaps most importantly, why might they be the right person for you?

Hiring someone to work in or around your home is often based on trust.

You’re not simply purchasing a product. You’re inviting someone into your living space, relying on their knowledge or asking them to help you make a decision that could involve thousands — sometimes hundreds of thousands — of dollars.

We want Pick a Pro to make that first introduction easier.

You can learn about local professionals, explore their profiles and decide who you would like to contact.

The final decision remains yours.

Home to Castle simply helps make the introduction.

Real Estate: Buying, Selling, Renting and Exploring

Few decisions affect our lives and finances as significantly as decisions involving real estate.

That’s why Home to Castle has a dedicated Real Estate section.

Visitors will be able to explore properties for sale, rental properties and upcoming open houses throughout Edmonton and the surrounding area.

If you’re actively buying, this gives you another place to discover available homes.

If you’re renting, you can explore properties available for lease.

If you’re not quite ready to move but want to see what’s available, that’s fine too. Sometimes looking is how the next chapter begins.

The Real Estate section will also include articles designed to make buying, selling, renting and investing easier to understand.

We’ll talk about preparing a property for sale, understanding different market conditions, purchasing your first home, evaluating neighbourhoods, preparing financially for homeownership, investment properties, mortgages and other subjects that affect Edmonton-area buyers, sellers and renters.

We’ll also highlight open houses so that you can see what’s happening in the market and plan your visits.

Real estate doesn’t begin when you sign a contract.

It often begins months — sometimes years — earlier with curiosity, questions and planning.

We want Home to Castle to be useful during that part of the journey too.

Discover What’s Happening Around Edmonton

A home doesn’t exist separately from the community around it.

One of the reasons people enjoy where they live is what they can experience once they walk out the front door.

That’s why Edmonton & Area Events is another major part of Home to Castle.

We’ll help you discover things happening throughout Edmonton and surrounding communities, including St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Beaumont, Devon and beyond.

Depending on the season, you may find festivals, markets, concerts, theatre, sporting events, family activities, workshops, community celebrations, food experiences, holiday events and some of those unusual little local happenings you might never have discovered otherwise.

Every issue of this magazine will highlight selected upcoming events, while the Events section of HomeToCastle.com will allow you to explore even more.

Looking for something to do with the kids?

Planning a date night?

Have friends visiting from out of town?

Want to try something completely different this weekend?

We want you to be able to visit Home to Castle and start exploring.

Businesses, organizations and qualifying members will also have opportunities to submit events, helping local organizers reach people who are actively looking for things to do.

Home is important.

But occasionally it’s good to leave it.

Garage Sales: One Neighbourhood at a Time

There’s something wonderfully simple about a garage sale.

One household clears out things it no longer needs. Another person discovers exactly what they’ve been looking for — often at a fraction of what it would cost new.

Items get reused instead of discarded.

Neighbours meet.

Kids occasionally set up lemonade stands.

And someone inevitably buys something they had absolutely no intention of buying when they left the house that morning.

Home to Castle’s Garage Sales section is designed to make local garage sales easier to promote and easier to find.

Our 2026 garage sale season runs through October 11, so this inaugural October 1st issue arrives just in time for the final stretch of the season.

Members can post up to three garage sales per year, giving sellers another way to get their sale in front of local shoppers while giving garage-sale enthusiasts an easier way to discover sales taking place around Edmonton and surrounding communities.

Rather than driving around hoping to spot a handwritten sign taped to a light pole, visitors can search ahead and plan where they’d like to go.

And when spring returns, so will garage sale season.

Prizes, Giveaways and a Little More Fun

Useful information is important.

But there should be room for a little fun too.

Home to Castle members will have opportunities to enter prizes and giveaways featured throughout the year.

These may include gift cards, products, services, event tickets and other prizes connected to local businesses and the community.

As Home to Castle grows, we plan to expand these opportunities and incorporate contests into different parts of the platform.

Imagine discovering an upcoming concert or family event in our Events section — and then discovering that Home to Castle is giving away tickets to attend it.

Or reading about a local business and having an opportunity to win one of its products or services.

The possibilities are substantial, and we’re just getting started.

Membership: Participate, Don’t Just Read

Home to Castle has been designed to be something you can participate in rather than simply something you read twice a month.

Membership opens the door to additional features and benefits throughout the website.

Depending on the feature, members will be able to participate in giveaways, post eligible events, promote garage sales and take advantage of other benefits as the platform grows.

We want membership to have practical value.

But there’s another reason for it.

A strong local platform becomes better when the people using it become part of it.

Someone posts an event.

Someone else discovers it.

A neighbourhood family posts a garage sale.

Another member finds it.

A local professional shares useful knowledge.

A homeowner uses that information to make a better decision.

A renter discovers a business that solves a problem.

A future homebuyer learns something today that helps them prepare for tomorrow.

One connection leads to another.

That’s how a community resource grows.

Supporting Local Professionals and Businesses

There’s another side to Home to Castle.

While we’re helping residents find useful products, services and information, we’re also creating opportunities for local businesses and professionals to become more visible within the communities they serve.

Small and locally operated businesses don’t always have enormous advertising budgets.

What they often do have is knowledge, experience and a genuine investment in their reputation.

Home to Castle gives participating professionals opportunities to introduce themselves, contribute useful information, promote their services and become part of a platform centred specifically around homes and local living.

We believe there’s value in connecting people who need something with local professionals who can provide it.

The better that connection becomes, the more useful Home to Castle becomes for everyone.

Something New on the 1st and 16th

This inaugural October 1st edition is only the beginning.

A new issue of the Home to Castle e-magazine will be released on the 1st and 16th of every month.

That schedule allows us to keep information timely.

Instead of publishing seasonal advice after the season has already arrived, we can help you prepare for what’s coming.

Instead of telling you about an event after it happened, we can help you discover it beforehand.

Instead of publishing real estate information only occasionally, we can continue discussing what’s relevant as the market changes.

Every issue will offer a combination of useful information, local discovery and seasonal content.

Some features will become familiar.

Others will change.

And new ones will be introduced as Home to Castle evolves.

What Comes Next?

Home to Castle wasn’t built with the intention of remaining exactly as it is today.

Quite the opposite.

This is the foundation.

As the community grows, so will the platform.

Future plans include expanded contests and giveaways, community activities, workshops, professional features, educational opportunities, seasonal campaigns and additional ways for residents and local businesses to connect.

We’d also like to create opportunities that move beyond the screen.

That could include workshops for first-time homebuyers, bringing together REALTORS®, mortgage professionals and others involved in the home-buying process to help people understand what they need to do before they’re ready to purchase.

Other professionals may eventually offer workshops and educational events around renovations, home maintenance, decorating, landscaping, financing and other home-related subjects.

The objective isn’t simply to build a large website.

It’s to build a useful local resource.

Those are two very different things.

A website can have thousands of pages and still give you no reason to come back.

We want Home to Castle to give you reasons to return.

Maybe today you’re looking for an electrician.

Next month you’re searching for a Christmas event.

Next spring you’re planning a garage sale.

A year from now you might be looking for a new home.

And somewhere along the way, perhaps an Expert Tip saves you money, a local professional solves a problem, an event gives your family a great Saturday afternoon or a giveaway simply makes your day a little better.

That’s what we want Home to Castle to become.

Your Home. Your Community. Your Home to Castle.

There are more than a million different stories unfolding every day throughout Edmonton and the surrounding communities.

Some happen in large houses.

Some happen in tiny apartments.

Some happen in brand-new homes where the boxes haven’t been unpacked yet.

Others happen in houses where generations of memories already live within the walls.

Every one of those places has something in common.

Someone calls it home.

Home to Castle was created around that idea.

Whether you’re maintaining the house you’ve owned for decades, settling into your first apartment, raising a family, managing a rental property, renovating, decorating, downsizing, investing, searching for your next home or simply wondering what’s happening around Edmonton this weekend, we hope you’ll find something here that makes life a little easier, more interesting or more connected.

Explore the magazine.

Visit the website.

Read an Expert Tip.

Find a local professional.

Browse a home.

Discover an event.

Enter a giveaway.

Post a garage sale.

And come back on October 16th to see what we’ve added next.

Today, though, we’re opening the doors for the very first time.

Welcome to the inaugural issue of Home to Castle.

Welcome to a new local resource for homeowners, renters and the communities we share.

Welcome home.

April in Edmonton is a shift. The snowbanks begin to retreat, patios start to reappear, the river valley slowly turns from white to green, and you can feel the city collectively stretch after winter. Early spring here isn’t just about warmer temperatures—it’s about momentum. It’s that in-between season where you can still wear a jacket but finally leave it unzipped. It’s the return of festivals, concerts, markets, theatre productions, and family-friendly outings that remind us why we love living here.

From cultural celebrations and high-energy concerts to hands-on workshops, sporting events, and seasonal markets, Edmonton and the surrounding area are packed with experiences between April 1st and April 15th. Spring Markets & Handmade Finds

Butterdome Craft Sale

This event draws artisans from across Alberta, showcasing everything from handcrafted jewelry and woodworking to home décor, specialty foods, and unique clothing.

It’s family-friendly, stroller-accessible, and ideal for those looking to refresh their space or find meaningful gifts. For many Edmontonians, attending the Butterdome sale is an unofficial signal that spring has officially arrived.

Theatre & Performing Arts

Broadway Across Canada – Spring Musical Production

Venue: Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium
Audience: Adults, teens, musical theatre fans

April is prime time for touring Broadway productions in Edmonton. The Jubilee Auditorium frequently hosts large-scale musicals in early spring, bringing national touring casts, elaborate sets, and big-stage energy to the city. These productions are perfect for date nights, girls’ nights out, or families with older teens who appreciate live performance.

There’s something about sitting in a grand theatre while outside the snow melts that feels symbolic—winter fades, the lights dim, and the show begins.

Contemporary Dance Performance

Venue: Timms Centre for the Arts
Audience: Adults, arts enthusiasts, university crowd

For something slightly more intimate and artistic, early April often includes contemporary dance or experimental theatre performances at the Timms Centre. These shows appeal to audiences who enjoy thought-provoking art and modern choreography. It’s a refined, cultural evening that pairs beautifully with dinner on Whyte Avenue.

Symphony & Classical Music

Edmonton Symphony Orchestra – Spring Series

Venue: Winspear Centre
Audience: Adults, families with older children, music lovers

The Winspear Centre’s spring programming offers everything from classical masterpieces to film-score concerts and guest conductors. April concerts often feature uplifting pieces—perfectly aligned with the season’s optimism.

The acoustics are world-class, the setting is elegant without feeling intimidating, and performances are suitable for music lovers of all ages. It’s a refined but accessible way to spend an early spring evening downtown.

Family Fun & Interactive Experiences

Telus World of Science Spring Exhibit

Venue: TELUS World of Science Edmonton

Easter-Themed Activities & Community Events

Venues: Various community halls, recreation centres, churches, and parks
Audience: Young children, families

With Easter often landing in early April, community egg hunts, family brunches, and spring craft workshops appear across Edmonton and surrounding communities like St. Albert, Sherwood Park, and Beaumont. These events are typically geared toward younger children and offer games, photo opportunities, crafts, and seasonal treats.

They’re cheerful, colourful, and ideal for families looking to celebrate spring traditions locally.

Outdoor Adventures & Active Spring Events

River Valley Guided Walks & Nature Programs

Venue: Edmonton River Valley
Audience: Adults, families, nature enthusiasts

As the snow melts and trails reopen, guided nature walks and environmental programs begin popping up in the river valley. These programs are ideal for those eager to shake off winter and reconnect with the outdoors.

Expect birdwatching tours, early spring ecology discussions, and photography walks. These are slower-paced, reflective events—perfect for those who enjoy a quieter spring experience.

Edmonton Oilers Home Games

Venue: Rogers Place
Audience: Families, adults, sports fans

Early April means the regular NHL season is wrapping up, and energy inside Rogers Place is high. Playoff anticipation, packed crowds, and downtown buzz make Oilers games one of the most electric experiences in the city.

Game nights turn Ice District into a social hub—restaurants fill, patios cautiously reopen, and fans bring serious volume. Even casual spectators get caught up in the atmosphere.

Live Music & Concerts

Touring Concert at Rogers Place

Venue: Rogers Place
Audience: Adults, teens depending on artist

Spring touring season is in full swing, and early April frequently includes major concert stops at Rogers Place. Whether it’s pop, country, rock, or hip-hop, large-scale arena concerts bring production value and energy that fills downtown with excitement.

It’s loud, it’s immersive, and it’s a reminder that Edmonton is firmly on the national tour map.

Midway Music Hall & Starlite Room Shows

Venues: Midway Music Hall, Starlite Room
Audience: Adults, young adults

For those who prefer a more intimate music setting, these venues host touring indie artists, DJs, and alternative bands. The crowd tends to skew young adult, but the vibe is welcoming and energetic.

These shows are ideal for adults who want live music without the arena-scale commitment.

Food & Drink Experiences

Spring Food & Beverage Festival

Venue: Edmonton Expo Centre
Audience: Adults 18+ or 19+ depending on alcohol service

Early spring often welcomes tasting festivals and culinary expos at the Expo Centre. These events highlight local breweries, wineries, distilleries, and restaurants, offering sampling opportunities and live entertainment.

It’s a social event, best suited for adults, and a fun way to explore Edmonton’s evolving food scene.

Obscure & Unique Finds

Local Pottery & Art Workshops

Venue: Various art studios in Old Strathcona
Audience: Adults, creative teens

Small studios frequently host spring-themed pottery or painting workshops in early April. These events are hands-on, beginner-friendly, and ideal for those wanting to try something new.

There’s something satisfying about shaping clay or painting spring florals while outside the streets slowly dry from winter melt.

Community Trivia Nights & Pop-Up Comedy

Venues: Local pubs and breweries across Edmonton
Audience: Adults 18+ or 19+

Early April trivia nights and small comedy shows offer relaxed, affordable entertainment. They’re intimate, interactive, and perfect for friend groups looking for something low-pressure but lively.

Surrounding Area Highlights

Spring here is regional—it’s not just Edmonton. It’s the entire surrounding area waking up at once.

This is your Edmonton & surrounding area spring events spotlight for April 1st to April 15th, 2026—where winter fades, energy rises, and there are more than enough reasons to get out and enjoy the season.

Sprucing Up Your Deck for Spring and Summer

Transform Your Outdoor Space into a Paradise

Ronald Rotsburg

Ah, the joy of basking in the sunshine on your very own deck! It’s the ultimate spot to unwind with loved ones or dive into some quiet me-time. But if your deck’s been looking a tad under the weather lately, fear not! A little creativity and some DIY magic are all it takes to transform it into your favorite outdoor haven this spring and summer.

Before diving into the fun part of decorating, it’s wise to tackle any repairs to ensure your deck is safe and sound. Fixing up and refreshing your deck isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a secure foundation for all the good times ahead.

Repair & Refresh with a Personal Touch

If your deck’s seen better days, start with some TLC. Swap out those worn-out boards and give everything a good once-over. If you’re a handy DIY enthusiast, this could be a rewarding weekend project. And don’t worry if you’re watching your budget—many fixes are more affordable than you’d think, especially if you’re willing to roll up your sleeves.

Check for Damage

Begin by thoroughly inspecting your deck for any signs of damage. Look for loose boards, protruding nails, or any signs of rot. Safety first! Fix these issues before they become bigger problems. You can replace damaged boards with new ones from your local hardware store. If you find any areas with mold or mildew, clean them thoroughly with a mixture of water and bleach.

Power Wash the Deck

After you’ve made necessary repairs, a good power wash can do wonders for your deck’s appearance. It removes dirt, grime, and mildew, making your deck look almost brand new. Renting a power washer is a cost-effective option if you don’t own one. Make sure to let the deck dry completely before moving on to the next steps.

Choose Furniture That Sings to Your Soul

Your deck furniture sets the stage for every moment of relaxation and entertainment. Whether you dream of big family barbecues or cozy afternoons curled up with a book, there’s outdoor furniture to match every vibe. Dive into the DIY spirit by refurbishing old pieces or selecting new ones that reflect your personal style. Imagine a chic, repurposed pallet sofa adorned with plush, vibrant cushions for a touch of whimsy.

DIY Furniture Ideas

If you’re feeling creative, consider building your own outdoor furniture. Pallet wood is a popular and affordable material that can be used to create sofas, coffee tables, and even planters. A coat of paint and some comfortable cushions can transform these pieces into stylish and functional furniture.

Shop Smart

If DIY isn’t your thing, shop for furniture that fits your budget and style. Look for durable materials like teak, aluminum, or resin wicker that can withstand the elements. Don’t forget to add some cozy touches like outdoor rugs, throw pillows, and blankets to make the space feel inviting.

Illuminate the Night

Transform your deck into an enchanting night-time retreat with the right lighting. Solar-powered lanterns, fairy lights, or DIY mason jar lights can add a magical glow to your evenings. It’s amazing how lighting can turn your deck into a stage for unforgettable summer nights.

DIY Lighting Projects

Mason jar lights are a simple yet charming addition to any deck. Fill them with fairy lights or LED candles and hang them from hooks or place them on tables. Solar-powered lights are another eco-friendly option that saves on electricity bills. String lights can be draped along railings or overhead to create a canopy of light.

Safety First

When installing lights, ensure all electrical components are rated for outdoor use. Use weather-resistant extension cords and keep them out of high-traffic areas to prevent tripping.

Creative Deck Railings

Who says safety can’t be stylish? Elevate your deck’s look with a railing that reflects your personality. If you’re up for a DIY challenge, consider customizing your railing with unique materials or colors. Even a simple coat of paint can breathe new life into an old railing, making your deck a true extension of your home’s character.

Railing Ideas

Glass panels offer a modern and sleek look while providing an unobstructed view of your surroundings. Cable railings are another contemporary option that combines safety with style. For a rustic touch, consider using reclaimed wood or adding decorative metal accents.

Painting Tips

Choose a paint color that complements your home’s exterior. Prep the surface by sanding and cleaning it thoroughly. Use a primer to ensure the paint adheres well, and apply at least two coats of high-quality exterior paint.

Embrace the Great Outdoors, Minus the Bugs

Enjoy your deck without uninvited critters by adding a screen. This project can be as simple or elaborate as you like, from installing ready-made panels to building a screened-in porch. It’s a fantastic way to create a bug-free zone where you can savor the fresh air in peace.

DIY Screen Installation

Screen panels can be purchased and installed relatively easily. Measure your deck’s dimensions and choose screens that fit your needs. If you’re up for a larger project, building a screened-in porch can extend your living space and add value to your home.

Natural Bug Repellents

Consider adding plants that naturally repel insects, such as lavender, mint, and citronella. These plants not only keep bugs at bay but also add beauty and fragrance to your deck.

Shade Your Space Stylishly

An umbrella or canopy can offer a cool respite on those blazing summer days. For the DIY enthusiast, designing a unique shade solution can be both fun and rewarding. Think beyond the traditional umbrella—explore retractable awnings, sail shades, or even a homemade pergola for a blend of shade and style.

DIY Pergola

Building a pergola can be a weekend project that significantly enhances your deck’s appearance and functionality. Use sturdy wood beams and posts, and consider adding climbing plants like wisteria or grapevines for a natural canopy.

Shade Sail Installation

Shade sails are an affordable and stylish option. They come in various shapes and sizes and can be easily installed with a few hooks and some rope. Choose a sail that complements your deck’s color scheme.

Bonus DIY Deck Decor Ideas

Create a Container Garden

Add life and color to your deck with a variety of potted plants. From herbs to flowers, a little greenery goes a long way in making your space feel inviting. Arrange plants at different heights and use decorative pots to add visual interest.

DIY Deck Bar

For those who love entertaining, a self-made outdoor bar can be the crown jewel of your deck. Use recycled wood or pallets for a rustic look that’s both functional and conversation-worthy. Add shelves for storage and a countertop for serving drinks.

Personalized Decor

Stamp your personality on every corner with homemade deck decor. Paint a mural, craft some outdoor artwork, or hang a hammock for a laid-back vibe. DIY wind chimes or bird feeders can add a whimsical touch.

Water Features

Add a soothing element with a small, DIY water feature. Even a simple tabletop fountain can create a tranquil atmosphere for your outdoor sanctuary. Consider using a solar-powered pump to save on energy costs.

Maintenance Tips for a Long-Lasting Deck

Regular Cleaning

Keep your deck looking fresh by regularly sweeping away leaves and debris. Hose down the surface to remove dirt and grime. For stubborn stains, use a gentle deck cleaner and scrub with a soft brush.

Annual Inspections

Perform an annual inspection to check for any signs of wear and tear. Look for loose boards, rusty nails, or any areas that need resealing. Addressing these issues promptly can prevent more significant problems down the line.

Sealing and Staining

To protect your deck from the elements, consider applying a sealant or stain every few years. This not only enhances the wood’s natural beauty but also provides a protective barrier against moisture and UV rays.

Creating a Deck for All Seasons

Weatherproof Furniture

Invest in weatherproof furniture that can withstand changing seasons. Materials like teak, metal, and synthetic wicker are durable and require minimal maintenance. Use waterproof covers to protect cushions and pillows.

Seasonal Decor

Switch up your decor to reflect the changing seasons. Use bright colors and light fabrics in the summer and cozy blankets and warm tones in the fall and winter. Seasonal decor keeps your deck feeling fresh and inviting.

Moving Day Magic: Transforming the Unwelcome into an Unforgettable Adventure

Mastering the Madness: Tips to Make Moving Day Easier and More Enjoyable

Ronald Rotsburg

Welcome to Moving Day, the ultimate test of patience, organizational skills, and your ability to remain calm while your entire life is packed into a truck. It’s the day everyone loves to hate, but with the right approach, it can become less of a dreaded chore and more of a quirky adventure. On average, people move every seven years, which means many of us will experience this delightful ordeal multiple times in our lives. So, let’s arm ourselves with some helpful tips, a touch of humor, and maybe even a little enthusiasm to make Moving Day not just tolerable but maybe even fun.

Pre-Move Preparations: The Art of Box Hoarding and Strategic Packing

1. Start Early and Pace Yourself

Begin your packing at least six weeks before your moving date. Think of this as your marathon, not a sprint. Packing is a colossal task, and spreading it out over several weeks can help you manage it without losing your sanity. Plus, it gives you ample time to sort, donate, or dispose of items you no longer need.

2. Gather Supplies Like a Pro

Stock up on moving supplies: boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, markers, and more boxes. Seriously, you’ll need more boxes than you think. Approach this like prepping for an epic DIY project—you want to be over-prepared rather than making frantic last-minute trips to the store.

3. Declutter and Organize

Moving is the perfect excuse to declutter. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and only keep items that spark joy. Not only will this reduce the amount you need to pack, but it will also make your new home feel more organized and spacious from day one.

4. Pack Room by Room

Pack one room at a time, and label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. This will make unpacking much easier. Create a priority list for unpacking, starting with the most essential rooms like the kitchen and bathroom.

5. Create a Survival Kit

Pack a “first-night” box with essentials: toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, medications, chargers, snacks, and, most importantly, your coffee maker and favorite mug. This will save you from having to dive into boxes looking for your toothbrush at midnight.

Moving Day: Chaos Management 101

1. The Early Bird Gets the Worm

Start early. The sooner you begin, the more time you’ll have to deal with any unexpected hiccups. Aim to have everything ready before the moving truck arrives.

2. Take Care of the Little Ones and Pets

Consider hiring a babysitter for young children and arranging for pet care. Moving day is chaotic, and having little ones and pets out of the way can make the process smoother and safer.

3. Greet Your Moving Crew

If you’ve hired professional movers, greet them with a smile and a clear plan. Show them around and let them know which boxes are fragile or need to be handled with extra care. A little friendliness can go a long way in ensuring a smooth move.

4. Do a Final Sweep

Before you leave your old place, do a final walkthrough to ensure nothing is left behind. Check all rooms, closets, and storage areas. Don’t forget to take a few moments to say goodbye and maybe snap a couple of last-minute photos for memories.

Moving In: Settling into Your New Home

1. Clean Before You Unpack

If possible, give your new place a thorough cleaning before you start unpacking. This is much easier to do without boxes and furniture in the way. Focus on the kitchen and bathrooms first—they’re the most used spaces and the ones you’ll want to be clean right away.

2. Unpack Essentials First

Start with your survival kit and essential rooms. Get your kitchen and bathroom functional first, then move on to setting up your bedroom. Having these areas organized will make the rest of the unpacking process more manageable.

3. Set Up One Room Completely

Try to completely set up at least one room on your first day. This will give you a retreat from the chaos and a sense of accomplishment. The living room or bedroom are good options—having a cozy space to relax in can make a huge difference.

4. Decorate as You Unpack

Take the opportunity to decorate as you unpack. Hang up pictures, arrange your furniture, and add personal touches to make your new house feel like home. This can make the process more enjoyable and give you a sense of progress.

5. Turn Unpacking into a Game

If you have kids, involve them in the unpacking process by turning it into a game. Build a box fort, have a scavenger hunt for specific items, or set a timer and see who can unpack their room the fastest. Keeping it fun will make the time fly by.

The Unplug Zone: Taking Breaks from Technology

While technology keeps us connected, it can also be a distraction. Moving day is a perfect time to create some tech-free zones and moments.

1. Set Tech-Free Times

Establish certain times of the day when you and your family will take breaks from technology. This can be during meals, while unpacking, or in the evenings. Use this time to connect, chat, and enjoy each other’s company without digital interruptions.

2. Inform Others

Let friends and family know that you’ll be less available on moving day. This way, they won’t be surprised if you don’t respond to texts or calls right away. It also helps you focus on the task at hand without feeling guilty.

3. Enjoy Tech-Free Activities

Engage in activities that don’t require technology, such as reading, playing board games, or simply sitting outside and enjoying your new surroundings. These breaks can be refreshing and help you recharge.

Additional Moving Tips to Keep You Sane

1. Label Everything

Label each box not just with the room it’s going to but also with a brief description of its contents. This can save you a lot of time when you’re looking for specific items.

2. Take Photos of Electronics Setup

Before you unplug your electronics, take photos of the wiring setups. This will make reassembling them much easier and ensure you don’t miss any connections.

3. Use Color-Coding

Successfully Selling Your Home in Any Market

Ten simple things you can do to make sure your home sells in any market

Ronald Rotsburg

As the snow begins to melt and the days grow longer, the Edmonton spring real estate market starts stretching its legs. Lawns reappear. For Sale signs multiply. Buyers who pressed pause over winter suddenly re-enter the market with fresh motivation. Historically, April through June marks the busiest stretch of the year in Edmonton real estate — and with more listings hitting the MLS, competition naturally increases.

Spring is opportunity season.

But it’s also strategy season.

If you’re thinking about selling, whether this spring or any other time of year, understanding how to position your home properly is the difference between sitting on the market and standing out in it. While spring often brings heightened activity, homes sell every single month in Edmonton — in summer, fall, and even in the depths of winter. The key is knowing how to adapt your approach.

Let’s break it down.

Understanding the Spring Market in Edmonton

Spring is traditionally the most active real estate season in Edmonton for several reasons:

  • Families want to move before the next school year.

  • Buyers are more comfortable house-hunting in better weather.

  • Curb appeal dramatically improves as snow disappears.

  • Inventory rises, giving buyers more options.

However, more listings also mean more competition. In April and May especially, you may be competing against dozens of similar homes in your price range and neighborhood. Buyers are comparing kitchens, yards, layouts, and upgrades carefully.

In a busy spring market, preparation is not optional — it’s essential.

If priced correctly and presented properly, spring can deliver quick sales and strong offers. If not, even in a “hot” market, a home can sit longer than expected.

Understand Your Selling Position — In Any Season

Before you even consider paint colors or landscaping, step back and assess your position.

Are you selling because you have to — or because you want to?

Are you upsizing, downsizing, relocating, or investing?

Spring sellers often feel pressure because “everyone else is listing.” But timing should align with your goals, not just the calendar.

Also consider:

  • How much equity do you have?

  • Are you prepared for closing costs?

  • Where are you moving next?

  • Is your next purchase conditional on this sale?

Clarity reduces stress — especially in spring when timelines can move quickly.

Enhancing Your Home’s Appeal — Spring Edition

In spring, first impressions matter more than ever.

Curb appeal becomes visible again. Buyers notice landscaping, siding condition, driveways, decks, and roofing. Even simple upgrades can pay off:

  • Rake leftover winter debris.

  • Edge sidewalks and driveways.

  • Add fresh mulch to garden beds.

  • Power wash siding and walkways.

  • Clean windows inside and out.

Inside, light becomes your best marketing tool. Spring sunlight fills rooms differently than winter. Open blinds. Remove heavy drapes. Replace burnt-out bulbs with warm but bright lighting.

Spring cleaning isn’t just tradition — it’s strategy.

Declutter closets. Organize storage areas. Clear countertops. Buyers aren’t just buying your square footage — they’re buying the feeling of space.

And remember: kitchens and bathrooms remain the top value influencers year-round. You don’t need a full renovation. Sometimes:

  • New cabinet hardware

  • Updated light fixtures

  • Fresh caulking

  • Modern faucets

  • Neutral paint

…can transform the perception of the space.

Selling in Summer: Different Energy, Different Buyers

Summer in Edmonton brings motivated buyers but slightly reduced inventory compared to peak spring. Families who didn’t secure a home earlier may feel urgency.

Summer advantages:

  • Lush landscaping at its peak

  • Outdoor living spaces shine (decks, patios, fire pits)

  • Longer daylight hours for evening showings

Highlight air conditioning, outdoor features, proximity to parks, and summer recreation options.

Buyers imagine BBQs, gatherings, and backyard evenings. Help them see it.

Selling in Fall: Serious Buyers Only

Fall markets in Edmonton tend to have fewer listings, which can work in your favor.

While overall buyer volume decreases slightly, fall buyers are often serious — job relocations, life changes, or missed spring opportunities drive activity.

Focus on:

  • Warm staging elements (cozy throws, layered lighting)

  • Furnace servicing (buyers will ask)

  • Roof and insulation condition

Position your home as comfortable and well-maintained heading into winter.

Selling in Winter: Yes, Homes Still Sell

Winter often scares sellers — but it shouldn’t.

Fewer listings mean less competition.

Serious buyers remain active year-round. Job transfers don’t wait for warm weather.

Winter strategy includes:

  • Clear snow and ice meticulously.

  • Keep lighting bright and welcoming.

  • Maintain comfortable interior temperature.

  • Showcase energy efficiency (new furnace, insulation, triple-pane windows).

A warm, inviting home on a cold day creates powerful emotional impact.

Analyze Local Market Trends

Edmonton’s real estate market evolves constantly. Certain neighborhoods trend differently than others. Infill properties, investment opportunities, and first-time buyer markets fluctuate based on interest rates and economic indicators.

Pay attention to:

  • Interest rate movements

  • Supply levels in your price bracket

  • Average days on market

  • Investor activity

  • Migration trends (especially interprovincial moves)

Understanding trends helps you price correctly — and pricing is everything.

Strategic Pricing — The Spring Advantage

In spring, pricing right can spark multiple-offer situations. Pricing too high can bury your listing under fresh competition.

A well-priced home:

  • Generates immediate attention.

  • Creates showing momentum.

  • Encourages stronger offers.

  • Reduces price reductions later.

Your first two weeks on market are critical. That’s when your listing gets the most online exposure.

Spring buyers move fast — if you’re ready.

Marketing with Precision — Not Just Posting

Your home deserves more than a simple MLS upload.

High-quality photography during spring captures natural light, blooming yards, and curb appeal. Drone footage showcases lot size and neighborhood proximity. Video walkthroughs increase engagement.

Targeted marketing should include:

  • Social media campaigns

  • Realtor network outreach

  • Buyer database exposure

  • Email marketing

  • Feature sheets highlighting upgrades

And yes — your listing must look excellent on mobile. The majority of buyers begin their search on their phones.

Sustainability & Modern Buyer Expectations

Energy efficiency isn’t a bonus anymore — it’s an advantage.

Highlight:

  • High-efficiency furnaces

  • Smart thermostats

  • New windows

  • Solar panels (if applicable)

  • LED lighting

  • Water-saving fixtures

Even small eco-friendly details add perceived value.

Preparing for Inspections — All Year Long

Spring thaw can reveal grading issues or minor foundation cracks. Fall can expose roofing concerns. Winter can highlight heating efficiency.

A pre-listing inspection is one of the most powerful tools you can use. It reduces renegotiations and builds buyer confidence.

Transparency builds leverage.

Timing Your Launch

In spring especially, timing can amplify visibility.

Listing just before a long weekend (like Easter) can increase exposure when buyers are actively browsing. Launching mid-week may maximize showing windows before the weekend rush.

Your Realtor should guide this strategy based on live market activity.

Community Matters More Than You Think

Edmonton buyers care about:

  • School zones

  • Proximity to parks

  • Recreation centres

  • LRT access

  • Walkability

When marketing your home, highlight the lifestyle — not just the square footage.

Is there a playground nearby? A walking trail? A popular coffee shop? These details influence buying decisions more than many sellers realize.

Final Thoughts: Spring Is Opportunity — But Strategy Wins Every Season

Spring may bring the highest volume of activity in Edmonton’s real estate market, but homes sell successfully every single month of the year.

The difference isn’t the season.

It’s preparation, pricing, presentation, and positioning.

Whether you’re listing in the competitive surge of April, the vibrant energy of summer, the focused calm of fall, or the quiet confidence of winter, the fundamentals remain the same:

  • Understand your situation.

  • Prepare your home properly.

  • Price strategically.

  • Market professionally.

  • Work with an experienced Realtor who understands Edmonton.

When you combine these elements, you don’t just list your home — you launch it.

And in Edmonton’s dynamic market, that launch can make all the difference between sitting… and selling.
